Why Liberals Should Back Border Security and Effective Immigration Law Enforcement

HI Gang:

My most recent commentary for CAPS (Californians for Population Stabilization) focused on the wrong headed idea that somehow only political Conservatives should want our nation’s borders secured and our immigration laws enforced.
America’s immigration laws have two primary objectives- to protect American lives and to protect the jobs held my American workers.  It is inconceivable that only Conservatives would want those goals accomplished.
The various news programs often resort to “food fights” where two individuals with opposing viewpoints debate various issues so that the audience is left with the idea that there are two sides to an issue when there may be several sides to the issue or, as is often the case, only one reasonable side.
Would it make sense, for example to debate the use of seat belts in a moving car?  Would it make sense to debate the arrest of drunk drivers?  Could anyone really argue that children should have to attend school (or alternatively be home-schooled?)  These issues don’t lend themselves to debate because it is commonsense that occupants of a moving vehicle should wear seat belts, that drunk drivers need to face consequences for their dangerous behavior and that children must be taught the “Three R’s” and then some!
Given the foregoing, how did the need to secure America’s borders become subject to debate?  How did the need to enforce immigration laws become an issue to be argued against?
The tactics employed by the open borders advocates, whom I have come to refer to as the Immigration Anarchists involve the use of intimidation as a weapon.  All too many Americans are so conditioned to not confront those that they disagree with that they are losing by default!  The time has long since come for Americans to stand their ground and clearly state their case for the securing of our borders- not to prevent the entry of individuals of a particular race, religion or ethnicity, but to make certain that those aliens who enter our country do not pose a threat to the safety and well being of the United States or its citizens.

If a person entered his home and was surprised to find an intruder sitting in his living room it is likely that the homeowner’s first exclamation would be to ask, “What are you doing here?”  This is a commonsense and virtually reflex question.  The concern is what prompted the intruder to break into that home.
Similarly we should be concerned about why an illegal alien ran the border to enter the United States illegally.
It is important to understand that an alien who evades the inspection process mandated by our immigration laws may have multiple reasons for entering the United States surreptitiously. The inspections process is supposed to prevent the entry of aliens into the United States whose prosence would be harmful. Title 8, United States Code, Section 1182 enumerates the various categories of aliens who are to be excluded from the United States. A review of those categories makes the intention and importance of our immigration laws, our borders and the inspections process crystal clear.
Americans of all political orientation should be in favor of having the borders of the United States secured against unlawful entry of those foreign nationals who would evade the inspections process.

Immigration is not a single issue but a singular issue that impacts nearly every challenge and threat confronting the United States today!
Simply stated, immigration laws exist to protect American lives and protect Americans’ jobs.  Anyone who opposes the effective enforcement of the immigration laws is, in fact, opposing those two critically important goals!

If our government’s failures to protect American jobs by securing our nation’s borders and effectively enforcing our immigration laws concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional “Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!

All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!

We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.

This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated, this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!

You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!

Democracy is not a spectator sport!

Lead, follow or get out of the way!

Why Liberals Should Back Border Security and Effective Immigration Law Enforcement

The concept of “The Big Lie” has been co-opted by the Immigration Anarchists, the opponents of border security and effective immigration law enforcement.  For the past several decades these folks have spread the mythology that those who seek secure borders and effective immigration law enforcement are right wing political extremists and bigots.  This is simply crazy.

When you consider that the immigration laws were enacted to save American lives and Americans’ jobs, you have to ask if Liberals don’t believe in preventing criminals and terrorists from entering the United States.  It would make no sense for Liberals to be opposed to national security and/or community safety.  In fact, the Liberals tend to be the most concerned about issues of safety.  This is why they are often portrayed as the “Mommies” while the Conservatives are portrayed as the “Daddies.”

Immigration is about national security- the 9/11 Commission Staff Report (Monograph) on Terrorist Travel addressed this nexus.  Here are two important excerpts from that report, the first of which is the first paragraph in the preface:

“It is perhaps obvious to state that terrorists cannot plan and carry out attacks in the United States if they are unable to enter the country. Yet prior to September 11, while there were efforts to enhance border security, no agency of the U.S. government thought of border security as a tool in the counterterrorism arsenal. Indeed, even after 19 hijackers demonstrated the relative ease of obtaining a U.S. visa and gaining admission into the United States, border security still is not considered a cornerstone of national security policy. We believe, for reasons we discuss in the following pages, that it must be made one.”

And the second under the title “Immigration Benefits” found on page 98:

“Terrorists in the 1990s, as well as the September 11 hijackers, needed to find a way to stay in or embed themselves in the United States if their operational plans were to come to fruition. As already discussed, this could be accomplished legally by marrying an American citizen, achieving temporary worker status, or applying for asylum after entering. In many cases,

the act of filing for an immigration benefit sufficed to permit the alien to remain in the country until the petition was adjudicated. Terrorists were free to conduct surveillance, coordinate operations, obtain and receive funding, go to school and learn English, make contacts in the United States, acquire necessary materials, and execute an attack.”

Traditionally, Liberals and Democrats are usually identified with the labor movement, a movement that originally sought to protect the rights and working conditions of American workers.  Liberals tend to like labor unions while Conservatives oppose unions.  Prior to the Second World War the administration and enforcement of the immigration laws was the responsibility of the United States Department of Labor.  It was understood that if large numbers of foreign workers were allowed to enter the United States and seek employment the economic doctrine of “Supply and Demand” would cause Americans to wind up competing with foreign workers and if they did not lose their jobs to their foreign competitors, at the very least, the wages for most jobs would plummet.  The effective enforcement of America’s immigration laws gave rise to the largest and most upwardly mobile Middle Class on the planet.  This gave rise to the concept of the “American Dream.”

Today, both parties have caused the immigration crisis confronting the United States. Ironically, the Democratic Party is pushing the hardest for creating a “Pathway to United States Citizenship” for unknown millions, perhaps tens of millions illegal aliens.  Besides making an utter mockery of the lawful immigration system that provides more than 1.1 million aliens with lawful immigrant status each year, placing them immediately on a pathway to U.S. citizenship, this proposal will also threaten national security for the reasons noted above in the quote from the 9/11 Commission Staff Report on Terrorist Travel and, just as disconcerting, create millions of competitors for jobs at time when America’s middle class is contracting as never before- largely because there are so many unemployed and underemployed American workers and wages are remaining stagnant if not declining.

Liberals and Conservatives need to stop pointing fingers and hurling accusations at each other and need to start speaking with one another. The “Divide and conquer” strategy of the immigration anarchists and others whose agenda has nothing to do with what is best for America and Americans must be defeated. It can be defeated if Americans of all political orientations work together for a change.  Literally and figuratively!

The time has come to vote for individual candidates irrespective of their political party affiliations.
