As you know, the great majority of my commentaries deal with various aspects of the immigration crisis that confronts our nation today. Sometimes, however, I become aware of other issues and feel compelled to write about those issues as well.
This evening I have decided to write about one of the closest and most consistent allies our nation has ever had- Israel.
This is not to say that the state of Israel or its leaders are always right- but their support for our nation has been without parallel. There nation is the only democracy in an extremely volatile part of the world.
I received the quote I have attached below from a former colleague at the INS and the excellent Op-Ed from former New York Mayor and Congressman, Ed Koch was sent to me by a former high ranking official at the House of Representatives with whom I had the distinct pleasure of working over a number of years.
When I watch the situations unfolding around the world and within our own country, I am dismayed and, indeed, angered by what now passes for leadership!
We live in a perilous world during an especially perilous era- the decisions that are made and not made can be expected to have repercussions for decades to come and may prove to be irreversible!
As many of you know, I worked for the former INS for some 30 years. During that time period I had the privilege of working with law enforcement officials from various federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
I also came to work closely with members of law enforcement agencies of a few foreign governments including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), British Customs, the Japanese National Police and the Israeli National Police.
Because of my close working relationship with the Israeli National Police (INP) which goes back to the summer of 1976 when, as a young and new INS special agent, I stumbled upon a plot being put together by members of the PLO to attack an Israeli oil refinery and with the assistance of the FBI helped Israel to thwart that attack.
My experiences with the Israeli National Police were extremely positive and I can tell you that without any equivocation- the Israelis were always eager to assist me and my colleagues in providing whatever support they could to further our criminal investigations of drug traffickers, terrorists and other assorted bad guys. Without their able and extremely trustworthy assistance many of the cases we successfully prosecuted might not have had those results.
I cannot think of a single instance where they did not provide the assistance we requested. I also came to trust them implicitly- they would never compromise any of our investigations and were, without exception, extremely quick to respond to our requests for their assistance. They even furnished a team of their police officers to monitor wire taps in the United States when the DEA initiated an investigation into a narcotics trafficking organization that was largely comprised of Israeli criminals. The Israeli officers were instrumental in the successful conclusion of this investigation because they were able to provide their knowledge of drug jargon and other slang terms that ordinary translators would never have been able to pick up on.
In another instance, because of my relationship with the Israeli police that was known by most members of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and other such task forces- when a citizen of Israel was encountered in Houston, Texas emerging from a known drug “stash house” and found to be in possession of a sawed-off shotgun as well as a quantity of narcotics- I was able to contact the INP representative at the Israeli Consulate in New York, a general in the INP, and within 48 hours I was provided with a dossier of the suspect that was a thick as a phone book. The Israelis actually sent an extra diplomatic pouch to New York that contained the material that we used to help initiate an investigation into the drug smuggling organization that the bad guy was a part of.
In conversations I have had with members of various law enforcement agencies and members of our military I have encountered in my travels- the importance of the relationship that the United States has had with Israel has, without exception been praised by those with whom I have spoken.
I can also tell you that as the grandson of a victim of the Holocaust, it was my parents’ belief that had the State of Israel existed during the Holocaust, that perhaps the Holocaust would not have happened. At the very least, it is all but presumed that the horrific price 6 million Jews and millions of Christians who were slaughtered by the Third Reich might have been spared.
Israel has been a consistent and staunch ally of the United States and today our government seems to be willing to forget just how important and unique that relationship has been and how it has been of enormous value to both Israel and the United States!
My parents always told me that it was essential to always remember who my friends were and to act accordingly. Would that the United States and a number of our nation’s leaders had learned that important lesson!
